Can you Dry your Flooded Home with a Shop Vac?
Has your home or business ever been invaded with water from a storm, pipe break, ice maker leak or toilet overflow?
Did someone suggest you dry it with a shop vac? Is this a good idea?
When the amount of water is minimal and you can vacuum all of the water up immediately (within a few minutes), it might be possible.
When water has been sitting for a period of time, consider this:
- A shop vacuum can only pull out standing water
- It cannot remove water bound in wood and walls
- Water bound inside walls and floors for a period of days can create the perfect conditions for fungal growth (mold)
- Drywall and wood can hold water for months if not properly dried
- You cannot tell if these materials are dry by touching them because our bodies are made up of 80% water
- Wood must be dried to a moisture content of 15% of less (according to the wood sale), to prevent future damage
- Water can wick up drywall about an inch per hour
At Buddy’s Carpet Care/Tuftaide, we have many tools for discovering where the water went and if it is still there. We have the expertise to turn your water intrusion into a healthy, mold free, dry home or business. Remember even a clean water loss can turn into a black water loss (tearing out a replacing everything) if left wet for a period of time.
